In 2022, she launched Arte para Sanarte, a community-based art initiative providing accessible art therapy workshops to underserved communities across Puerto Rico. Through this project, she has developed a socially engaged practice that connects art, wellness, and cultural identity, expanding access to creative healing spaces island-wide.
As a visual artist, Neryna’s work has evolved from portraiture to explorations of spirituality, ancestry, and identity, drawing on Taíno, Indigenous, and Afro-Caribbean influences. Her artistic practice reflects a dialogue between science, faith, and embodied experience, expressed through color, symbolism, and intuitive processes.
Artist Statement:
"I am a multidisciplinary artist and community-based art facilitator with over 10 years of experience designing and implementing projects that foster self-expression, emotional well-being, and cultural reflection. My practice integrates art therapy methodologies, creative facilitation, social engagement, and eco-art principles to create safe, inclusive, and transformative spaces that encourage participants to explore both personal and environmental connections.
Through my project, “Arte para Sanarte” (Art to Heal), I have developed and refined a methodology implemented with diverse populations, including women, children and youth, LGBTQ+ communities, families, and older adults across Puerto Rico. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to using art as a tool for healing, cultural connection, and identity exploration, while fostering awareness of our relationship with the natural world.
In addition to my community work, I maintain an active visual art practice as a painter and a photographer, exploring themes of nature, spirituality, ancestry, and Puerto Rican identity.
My primary passion lies in facilitating therapeutic and eco-art experiences that directly impact communities. I love designing community-based programs that blend creativity, wellness, and environmental consciousness, and have successfully coordinated initiatives in collaboration with various nonprofit organizations."
