Healing Through Creative Art: Supporting Puerto Rico’s LGBTQIA+ Community

An essay about how creative art therapies provide LGBTQIA+ individuals in Puerto Rico with safe, inclusive spaces to heal, build resilience, and form supportive communities that counteract discrimination and social isolation.

The LGBTQIA+ community in Puerto Rico confronts systemic challenges that significantly impact mental health and social well‑being. Research shows that a large percentage of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Puerto Rico report having experienced discrimination at some point in their lives due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, with schools and workplaces being common sites of bias and exclusion. Discrimination in healthcare settings further contributes to avoidance of routine medical care among community members.

These patterns of marginalization are reflected in the mental health landscape of LGBTQIA+ youth on the island. A significant proportion of LGBTQ+ youth experience symptoms of anxiety and depression, and many are unable to access the mental health care they desire. Their risk of suicidal ideation and attempts remains elevated due to mistreatment and societal stigma.

Local studies confirm that LGBTQ adolescents face higher rates of bullying, depression, substance use, and suicidal thoughts or attempts compared with their heterosexual peers. These mental health disparities are not inherent to sexual orientation or gender identity; rather, they arise from minority stress, rejection, and a lack of affirming environments. Such realities underscore the urgent need for supportive interventions that are culturally grounded, accessible, and community‑centered.

In response to these challenges, therapeutic art workshops based on creative art therapies can serve as powerful modalities for individual healing and collective empowerment. These approaches allow participants to express emotions and process complex experiences, particularly those difficult to articulate verbally. For many LGBTQIA+ people, creating art becomes a way to explore identity, reflect on experiences of rejection or resilience, and build self-awareness and emotional regulation. Through expressive practices such as painting, collage, movement, and storytelling, participants can reduce stress, build coping strategies, and strengthen self-esteem.

Importantly, creative art therapies also foster social connection and community, which are vital for populations facing chronic stigma. Group workshops create inclusive spaces where LGBTQIA+ individuals can share experiences, validate each other’s narratives, and build supportive networks. These shared artistic experiences help combat social isolation, cultivate a sense of belonging, and strengthen bonds of solidarity—especially for those who may feel marginalized or unsupported in family, school, or workplace environments.

Program models that integrate therapeutic art into community engagement also extend beyond the therapeutic setting. Initiatives such as artistic circuits—interactive, itinerant art activities carried out in community spaces—invite broader public participation and dialogue. These experiences not only provide platforms for creative expression among LGBTQIA+ attendees but also educate and challenge local audiences about inclusion, equity, and human dignity. In doing so, art becomes both a tool for individual healing and a catalyst for cultural change, encouraging empathy and breaking down barriers of prejudice.

I firmly believe that Puerto Rico’s LGBTQIA+ communities deserve access to affirming, culturally relevant spaces that support mental health and social flourishing. Given the well-documented impact of discrimination on emotional well-being, integrating therapeutic art and creative art therapies into community support strategies offers a compassionate and effective approach. By nurturing individual resilience, fostering connections, and building inclusive networks, these creative practices help expand support systems, strengthen collective identity, and contribute to a more just and caring society.
